MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses), online education
Catherine Katsafouros was involved in the design, development and instruction of the first MOOC (massive open online course) offered within the SUNY system. The 15-week MOOC Introduction to Computational Arts has been offered at Stony Brook University in the traditional classroom under the title ARS/CDT 208 Introduction to Media Technology, and it is an interdisciplinary course involving creative programming with Processing, digital art with Photoshop and sound with Logic.
Catherine had been co-instructing the creative programming and visual art portions of Introduction to Media Technology at Stony Brook University, and when Computer Music Professor Dr. Margaret Schedel led the initiative in bringing this dynamic course to the MOOCsphere, she enlisted Catherine Katsafouros for the visual art portion of the course and Timothy Vallier for the creative programming portion.
The course, offered on the Coursera.org platform, was very well received and achieved an unprecedented retention rate in the history of massive open online courses. Its international audience increased from 5,155 students in its first run as a 15-week course in the Fall of 2013, to 6,791 students when the visual art portion ran as an independent 5-week segment in the Spring of 2014, to 19,484 students when the complete 15-week course ran again in the Fall of 2014.
The MOOC Introduction to Computational Arts was scheduled to coincide with the offering of ARS/CDT208 at the Stony Brook University campus, allowing Catherine and the campus team of instructors to flip the classroom and offer Stony Brook students a blended experience of the virtual and the physical class.
Catherine will continue working with Dr. Schedel in the Summer/Fall of 2015 in creating additional MOOC content for Stony Brook University.
